NIDA: Theatre and Associated Facilities Development

Client Name

National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA)

Date

2003

Project Description

NIDA in Sydney undertook a major development to add new theatres, rehearsal space, studios, exhibition space and administration facilities. The magnificent drum-shaped Parade Theatre is ideally suited for the presentation of theatre works, musicals and dance productions, and it can easily accommodate all types of presentations. It features stalls and two balconies in a horseshoe design that fosters an overwhelming sense of warmth and intimacy. In full usage mode, there is an audience capacity of 725. The theatre features a 14 x 10 metre main stage and 14 x 6.5 metre rear stage, an under stage basement, Green Room and six dressing rooms. It also features an orchestra pit accommodating 20 musicians, a thrust stage, 49 flies and state-of-the-art lighting and sound facilities. In June 2002 the theatre was awarded the prestigious Sir John Sulman medal for architecture.

Our Role

RPA worked closely with NIDA to understand its goals and objectives and to translate these into appropriate architectural and design briefs. The project was delivered on time and on budget. It is considered by many in the performing arts industry as possibly the most successful theatre of its kind in Australia.
