Docklands Creative Communities Study

Client Name

VicUrban

Date

2009

Project Description

In early 2009 VicUrban was researching and developing opportunities to provide community infrastructure within Melbourne’s Docklands precinct. One of the key areas of research was the provision of spaces and places that support and accommodate cultural activity in Docklands. An identified community infrastructure priority was the need for accessible, flexible and multi-purpose spaces for arts and cultural activity in the short to medium term (2-5 years) and a need for more arts and cultural space in the Melbourne municipality.

Our Role

Root Projects Australia was engaged to assist VicUrban to understand local demand for arts and cultural facilities and to plan places and spaces for arts and cultural activity in Docklands. Through research and consultation with key stakeholders we prepared a detailed analysis of the demand for places and spaces for arts and cultural activity in Docklands and associated needs/requirements; identified individuals and organisations interested in establishing premises/operations in Docklands and articulated their respective needs; prepared A series of models for ownership and management of different arts and cultural premises, platforms or venues; and presented research, analysis and models to VicUrban and key stakeholders.
